Ubisoft has soft-launched Assassin's Creed - Identity in the Australian and New Zealand App Stores. It's the closest we've got to a proper Assassin's Creed game on smartphones so far.

It's an action-RPG (a super lite RPG) that has you create your own assassin and have them complete short missions during the Italian Renaissance.

What will please many of you is knowing that Identity has the parkour-style "freedom of movement" of the main Assassin's Creed series. It even has carts filled with hay that you can jump into.

It works on the touchscreen using a tap-to-move system, or you can go for a more hands-on approach with dual virtual stick controls.

As you progress, you'll unlock new locations, missions, and items. Your character will also level up, letting you customise their specialties.

There are 16 types of missions, all of which are designed to be short while allowing for experimentation. You can also call in friends or hire help to complete missions with ease.

Being a free to play game, Identity has wait timers when you upgrade skills, and a crafting system you can spend money on. You can also put your real cash towards Altair's costume, if you like.

If you're in New Zealand or Australia, you can download Assassin's Creed - Identity for free on the App Store right now.

As to everyone else, we'll let you know when Ubisoft launches it across the globe in 2015.
