Final Fantasy VII writer: 'With the iPad going on sale, the age of Nintendo is over'

Masato Kato, the ex-Square Enix scribe responsible for penning such RPG epics as Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Trigger, has deployed some harsh words for Nintendo on his Twitter account.

"With the iPad going on sale," he tweets (in Japanese), "the age of Nintendo is over". He continues to say that Nintendo was digging its own grave with the Wii and DS. That's the 70 million selling Wii and the 130 million selling DS, just to clarify.

Kato should probably watch his tongue, as the majority of his freelance work has been on Nintendo platforms. Since leaving Square, he's worked on the Mana series on DS, the Chrono Trigger remake, and Baten Kaitos on GameCube.

With the current iPad gaming line-up, it's a little tricky to see how exactly it would topple the multi-million selling consoles and franchises of the 30 year video game veteran Nintendo. It'll certainly make huge waves in the tablet and laptop markets, but its impact on the gaming space is yet to be seen.

iPad went on sale in the UK, and Japan where Kato presumably saw it, last week, topping worldwide sales to over two million. Nintendo's next big thing is the 3DS, which will be revealed at E3 this month.
