Steve Jobs – yes, Steve Jobs – is on stage in San Francisco talking up Apple's big new thing: the iPad 2.

After the usual introductory goading of Apple's rivals ("copycats") and an emotionally charged film about the many humanitarian applications of the iPad, Steve finally spilled the beans on the specs and price.

The iPad 2 will have a dual-core A5 chip with the same power consumption as the iPad's A4 – it gets ten hours of battery life. The graphical performance is nine times faster than the iPad. As expected, it contains front and rear cameras. It also contains a gyroscope.

It's 8.8mm thick, making it 33 per cent thinner than the iPad, and thinner even than the iPhone 4. To Steve Jobs at least it feels “totally different.” It's available in two colours: black and white (neither of which is technically a colour, but we'll let that go.)

The device features HDMI-out, giving you “mirrored video output” on iPad and TV. It works with all apps and outputs at up to 1080p. The cable for this costs $39.

The iPad 2 is exactly the same price as the existing iPad, and it's shipping on March 11th.
