Glu Games has soft-launched Amazing Battle Creatures for iOS in New Zealand today.

In many respects, this is a free-to-play spin on the classic Nintendo-only Pokemon games. It's not a bad take on the formula though it certainly lacks some depth.

Glu Games has clearly focused on providing a casual slice of the creature collecting and battling of Pokemon that we know and love.

You journey across the world towards the big league competitions, hoping to become champion. It's a level-based game, and each level comes with a few waves of enemies to defeat.

Amazing Battle Creatures

As expected, the creatures are categorised by their type: Plant, water, fire, and so on. So there are weaknesses to exploit, such as plant creatures being vulnerable to fire attacks.

When you beat a level, you're then given the opportunity to use the Sparks you've earned to level up your creatures. This gives them new abilities, and after enough levelling, they'll evolve to more powerful forms.

If you run out of Sparks to level your creatures with then you can use coins. Yep, this is where the free-to-play design comes in.

Spark them out

You can purchase extra coins, packs of creatures, individual creatures, and limited time offers in the Store with real cash.

You can also earn new creatures by progressing through the game and defeating other trainers. So, in theory, you shouldn't need to spend any cash to get through the game.

That being said, if you're looking to compete online in the PvP arenas, then spending cash may be a good idea (more powerful creatures will surely prevail).

As mentioned, Amazing Battle Creatures is only available in New Zealand right now. We'll let you know when it launches around the rest of the globe.
