Akihabara - Feel the Rhythm review - You won't feel it very much

Akihabara - Feel the Rhythm is a puzzle game with a beat to it. Like, literally, there's a beat going on in the background and the better you puzzle in time to it, the more points you'll score.

It's a little like Lumines in that way. In that it's an awful lot like Lumines. But it's got more of an Anime bent to the art-style, as you might expect from the game.

The end result? Eh, it's okay. There's a decent idea here, but it's unlikely that it's going to grip you for a particularly long time.

Beat me

The game has two mechanics at play. There's a row of shapes moving down the screen, and a pulsing bar that's sweeping across it.

The bar, if you tap at the right time, will change one of the shapes that make up the row into the one highlighted at the top of the screen. The better timed your tap, the more points for the change.

Then when the row hits the other shapes collecting at the bottom of the screen, it'll clear any matches of a certain number you make, depending on the difficulty level you're playing at.

If you're playing in campaign mode the backgrounds, music, and shapes will change as you score more points. Sometimes this helps, more often than not it's going to hinder.

And that's about all there is to it. You're either going to get hooked or you're going to be left feeling pretty cold. There's not that much in-between.

The puzzling is solid, but it's not remarkable, and the aesthetic is, well, it's fine. There's nothing wrong with anything that the game tries.

Beat it

But when the best thing you can think to say about a game is that there's nothing wrong with it, you know that it's never going to set the world on fire.

If you're desperate for a new puzzler that mixes beating and matches then by all means give it a go. If you're not, just stick with Lumines. It's better.

There's a nice idea here, but it's not enough to see you playing the game after more than a few minutes
