Savvy app excavators have dug deep into the resources for iBooks, the official eBook reading app on iPhone and iPad, and found some interesting new assets that hint at a screen resolution bump on the next iPad.

MacRumours found four different versions of the little red bookmark that flops over your last read page: a tiny one for iPhone, a medium one for iPad, a pretty huge one for the iPhone 4 and a massive, stonking great bookmark for the “iPadx2”.

Seeing as the picture is double the size of the original iPad image, it stands to reason that the whole resolution would be twice the dimensions, or a humongous 2048×1536 resolution. That’s higher than most desktop monitors, even at sizes more than double the iPad’s tiny 10-inch display.

But would a Retina display iPad cost you more? Crunchgear saw a $700 iPad appear on US retailer Best Buy, before it was quickly removed. That’s a good $100 more expensive than any iPad available, potentially revealing that you might have to pay a premium for high resolution visuals.

We’ll know for sure very soon. If the annual product refreshes for iPhone and iPod touch are anything to go by, we’ll see a new iPad in the coming months, or even weeks.
