Just a few days after iOS 4.1 hit the airwaves, bringing with it Game Center and other tweaks, bug fixes, and features, its iPad-compatible follow-up is in the hands of developers.

This means that iPad will soon enjoy the features recently and not so recently bestowed upon iPhone and iPod touch, including folders, unified inbox, multitasking, and a slightly fancier version of Game Center.

It'll also allow you to print remotely from your iPad using AirPrint, and stream video to AppleTV.

One interesting feature of the update on iPad is that the orientation lock button now mutes the device, since iOS 4.2 makes it possible to lock the orientation in the taskbar. You'll also be able to have 20 apps per folder, rather than 12.

Initial impressions of iOS 4.2 running on iPad have been positive. Gizmodo has run a story entitled, 'iOS 4.2 on iPad: There's No Going Back', while Engadget describes the update as 'pretty great.'

iOS 4.2 will also run on all generations of iPhone and iPod touch excluding the first. The update will be available in November.
