This Wednesday, iPhone and iPod touch owners will boot up iTunes and be greeted by new software update, iOS 4.1.

The exact date was outed by Apple’s UK page. While the standard American site gave the release date as “Coming Soon”, the British page had the date set for Wednesday. The UK page has since been updated for global parity to say “Coming Soon” as well.

What does iOS 4.1 give? Glad you asked: first up, it fixes a handful of bugs found in the previous feature bump, and brings iPhone 3G back to life. Many users of the 3G suffered from slowdown after installing the latest update. iOS 4.1 promises to fix said sluggishness.

The update also enables Apple’s achievement, leaderboard, and friends service Game Center and adds social networking platform Ping to the iTunes app.

iPhone 4 users get two new camera features, too: you can directly upload HD video (either directly captured or edited in iMovie) to YouTube or MobileMe, and take high dynamic range (HDR) photos, that uses three differently-exposed shots and some magical trickery to make great, professional snaps.

The update will also be for the new iPod touch, which presumably will ship with iOS 4.1 already installed when it hits retail later this week.

iPad will get its own software update, which includes multitasking, folders, printing, and more in November.
