iOS 4.0.2 update fixes PDF exploit, locks out one-click iPhone jailbreak

Apple has quickly patched the software oversight that allowed iPhone and iPad users to jailbreak their devices simply by clicking a button on a website.

The sneaky site, still available to non-updated users at Jailbreakme.com, actually loads up a PDF that, thanks to some embedded fonts, overflows the device’s stack buffer and allows coders to gain access to system privileges. It’s like a heist movie, but for Apple nerds.

To put your fears at rest, Apple has plugged the hole with iOS 4.0.2 for iPhone and iPod touch, and iOS 3.2.2 for iPad. Get them if you’re a legit user, but fear them if you’re a jailbreaker - devices on this new update won't be able to be jailbroken yet, and (unless you've saved your SHSH blobs through Cydia), you won't be able to go back to an earlier update, either.

But fear not, hackers and unlockers, as famed jailbreaker Comex has hinted on Twitter, "Remember 4.1 rhymes with fun," signalling that the team will turn their attention to creating a solution for the next full iOS release.

If you're not interested in jailbreaking your devices, get the newest update from iTunes, right now.
