Apple ditches OS support for the original iPhone

Did you spot anything you liked in our coverage of the iPhone 4.0 operating system? Multitasking, folders, unified inboxes, Game Center, and so on? It's all very swish.

Well I hope you've got an up-to-date iPhone, or you're out of luck.

The latest episode in, "The Adventures of Steve Jobs's one sentence email replies" regards Apple's future support of the original iPhone. One 2G owning iPhone user emailed the CEO of Apple and asked him if the original iPhone would see any future updates.

"Sorry, no", replied Jobs. Ouch.

So if you've got the first iPhone or iPod touch, you'll get zilch. If you've got the 3G iPhone or the second generation touch you'll get most of the fuctionality except multitasking. And if you've got the iPhone 3GS or a brand new 32 or 64GB touch, you'll get the whole kit and kaboodle.

The iPhone 4.0 operating system is out for iPhone and iPod touch this summer, and will hit iPad in the autumn.
