iOS 8 tips - How to install, use, and remove widgets from Notification Center
At a glance
One cool new feature in iOS 8 adds widgets to your Notification Center. Should you allow it, an app can provide information and even buttons right there on the Today panel of the drop-down window.
This guide will show you how to add widgets, and then remove them when they inevitably annoy you.
First things first, you need to download an app from the App Store that supports widgets.
As of now, there's no easy way of knowing if an app has a widget so you'll have to read the description and update notes carefully. If you want to try this out right now, though, grab freebie apps Duolingo and Kitchen Stories Cookbook.
When the app has downloaded, open it up once and do anything you need to log in to the app.
Quit the app and then open the Notification Center by tugging down from the top of the screen. Make sure you're on the Today tab and then hit the Edit button at the bottom of the list.
Now you'll see all the installed apps that have widgets, as well as built-in ones like stocks, reminders, calendar, and traffic conditions. Use the red minus symbols and green plus symbols to remove and add the widgets you want.
Press 'Done' to return to the Today panel. You will now see your new widget.
Some are more advanced than others. The two shown above just relay information from the app but others include buttons, checklists, and other controls.
There are two ways to remove a widget. Either head back into the edit menu and remove the app from the included list. Or simply delete the app. Either way, it's bye bye widget.
