Sega has announced that its 2009 iPhone port of Genesis classic Sonic The Hedgehog will receive a major free content update sometime in the coming weeks.

According to the Japanese developer and publisher, its updated port will run at a smooth 60 frames per second.

This is thanks to a new game engine that's apparently similar to the revamped engine that powers the iPhone version of Sonic CD.

Thankfully, the game's current hideous on-screen controls are to be overhauled, too. Post-update, you'll be able to control Sega's Blue Blur with a virtual joystick and a small 'jump' button.

But wait, there's more.

In the updated version of Sonic The Hedgehog, you will be able to toggle Sonic's infamous spin attack on and off, and view the game's UK, US, and Japanese cartridge art.

While Sega is yet to confirm that it will update Streets of Rage and the other Genesis ports that it's released on the App Store, a company executive has "casually" hinted as much to Slide to Play.

You can grab Sonic The Hedgehog for your iPhone for £1.99 / $2.99 right now.
