Dice Mage is a free to play strategy-action game that sees you fighting monsters and acquiring new spells.
Its dice roll-based tactics keep things interesting - as do the lovely 16-bit art and catchy music - but also produce some fundamental problems.
In battle, whoever rolls the highest number gets to attack, with the option to re-roll (at the exponentially rising cost of mana and gems) if you lose.
But the fact that you can watch an ad or pay to get more gems means there is a distinct pay to win whiff about Dice Mage. This is exacerbated by a sense of mistrust when continuously unfair dice rolls mean you have to cough up more gems.
It's a shame, because later on some strategy - like when to re-roll and when to take the hit - does unfold.
But it's hard to shake off the thought that the ones rolling the dice also profit from your failure.
