Samsung comes up with a Bada idea

New open mobile platform set for December launch

Samsung comes up with a Bada idea

Coming up with your own mobile platform with giants such as Microsoft and Google occupying the market would seem like a bold, possibly foolhardy move. If any company has the sheer resources to throw behind such a venture, though, it’s Samsung.

And that’s just what the world’s largest conglomerate is about to do. Bada (Korean for 'ocean') is the name of the Korean giant’s custom mobile OS, which you can expect to see rolling out on Samsung handsets early next year.

You might think it strange that a company whose handsets already support the likes of Android, WinMo and Symbian would want to launch yet another platform into the mix, but apparently the name, “alludes to Samsung’s commitment to a variety of open platforms in the mobile industry.”

Samsung believes that its experience in dealing with such a diverse array of mobile platforms gives it a unique insight, and has resulted in the creation of, “one of the most developer-friendly environments available, particularly in the area of applications using Web services.”

A “ground-breaking User Interface” is also promised, though there are no pictures of the system in action as yet. There's also no indication of how the thing will actually work.

We’ll find out more when the platform is officially launched at a London event some time in December. In the meantime, check out the website.
