Metaio has released an ambitious augmented reality first-person shooter (FPS) called Zombie ShootAR onto the Ovi store.

Augmented whatnow? Augmented reality is a bit of a buzz phrase that describes apps and games that make use of the user’s real world location.

In the context of Zombie ShootAR, that means a shooting game where the levels are captured live via your Nokia’s camera. Point your camera phone into your living room, for example, and 3D zombies will begin crawling out of the ground and shuffling towards you.

You can then aim at them by tilting your phone, blasting them with your shotgun via the camera button.

"This is an important step on our roadmap and a first proof of concept that AR games can really be fun” said Peter Meier, CTO of metaio. “We want to bring the virtual gaming world to the real world."

Metaio recently released version 2.0 of Junaio, an augmented reality platform with an open API for developers. At the moment this is only available on iPhone, but the release of Zombie ShootAR marks a clear intention to bring the project to Symbian.

A free demo version can be downloaded from the Ovi store now.
