Konami deals in new modes for Yu-Gi-Oh! on PSP

Konami says its first Yu-Gi-Oh! GX title for the PSP, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force, will be out in February.

Featuring key characters from the Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force is the first outing of the duelling franchise on Sony's handheld, and it promises a faithful recreation of the gazillion-selling trading card game.

As the full name highlights, there's something new for long-term fans too; Konami says GX Tag Force will feature a brand new Team Duel mode, enabling two-player duels using the PSP's Adhoc mode.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! GX TV show follows the adventures of entrants to a Duel Academy and focuses on the pupils of the Slifer Red dormitory as they take on other students from the Ra Yellow and Obelisk Blue dorms. In the game, the Duel Academy decides to hold a unique competition to enable the students to compete in teams of two.

Enter that new mode. Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force's tag team battle system lets teams of two players duel each other, with each player holding their own unique deck of cards.

Two players can compete wirelessly in single or tag duels, allying with a CPU co-player to take on a friend and their CPU partner, or joining forces with a CPU duelist against two CPU opponents – each taking alternative goes to attack their opponents.

Tag Force also promises more cards than any Yu-Gi-Oh! video game to date, allowing for new deck and duel strategies as new cards from the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX decks are implemented.

The game's battles are highlighted with an updated duel field, complete with specific animations for each card, while players can also create their own duel puzzles for further card-based action.
