The jury is most definitely out on whether first-person shooter games can work on a touchscreen handset like iPhone.

On the one hand, you surely need a mouse and keyboard (or possibly a console joypad) to get the most out of this genre. On the other hand, nobody knows if touchscreens could provide an even more intuitive interface for an FPS.

Anyway, an early attempt to find out is Yeti3D, which has been developed by Marco Giorgini, based on an ancient (well, 2003) 3D engine created for the Game Boy Advance.

It's a Doom-style FPS that Giorgini says is in its alpha stages, although he's made it available for free for anyone who's got a hacked iPhone to play.

There's only one level right now, but the game does run in portrait or landscape mode. Want to see how it plays? Check out the YouTube vid below:
