Sophomore slump?

There's more bad news for Xperia Play fans, I'm afraid.

After the confirmation from Sony last week that the device won't be getting the Android Ice Cream Sandwich update, The Inquirer is reporting that the rumoured Xperia Play 2 won't be seeing the light of day any time soon.

Speaking at the Open Mobile Summit in London, Sony Mobile's chief marketing officer Steve Walker was quick to quash rumours about a second-generation version of Sony's PlayStation-certified smartphone, claiming instead that the company is more focused on a connected approach across all its devices.

"Bringing the PlayStation Network to other devices is important. Doing so creates a community based relationship with customers, like those found on social networking web sites," Walker said.

While the promise of more Sony smartphones with built-in PlayStation support can only be a good thing, it looks like we're going to have to continue waiting patiently for any news on the successor to the Xperia Play.
