THQ takes Worms online for DS and PSP in Open Warfare 2
More customisation, more modes and more comedy guns
To look at them laid out on your garden path, you wouldn't consider worms to be either warlike or particularly funny, yet the Worms series of games have been successfully pedalling such myths for years.
Still, every elongated soft-bodied invertebrate animal has its day, and when Worms: Open Warfare debuted on PSP and DS, frankly we weren't that impressed. After a dozen years, the experience seemed a little familiar.
But maybe, just maybe, developer Team 17 was listening to our calls for more online modes, because one of the main features for the announced Worms: Open Warfare 2 is that both the DS and PSP versions will let you challenge players from all over the world via your wireless connection for a head-to-head battle.
On DS, doing this is relatively easy as the game will support the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, but without similar universal PSP infrastructure, we're assuming Team 17 and publisher THQ will set up their own global server.
Whichever version you play, however, daily updated stats and global leaderboards will be available on your handheld and via the the official Worms website.
Another suggestion we proffered was more customisation options, and once again it's a route Worms: Open Warfare 2 will be exploring. You'll be able to create your own landscapes as well as editing your own flags, comedy helmets, tombstones and even victory dances for your little pink friends.
As for the game modes, the main Campaign mode loosely reimagines battles from man's past including the watery depths of the Spanish Armada, the trenches of World War I and the Blitzkreig of World War II.
Other promised modes include the classic Deathmatch, Rope Race, Fort and Puzzle, and there will be a Firing Range where you can test your skills with new weapons such as the Bunker Buster and Buffalo of Lies. Old Worms favourites such as the Super Sheep, Concrete Donkey and the Holy Hand Grenade will also be available.
Currently still underground, Worms: Open Warfare should surface for a summer release.
