Things falling down the screen have long been a staple of puzzle gaming but whereas we recently reviewed the enjoyable iPhone and iPod touch falling numbers game DropSum, now our attention has been pointed in the direction of falling letters game Word Tower, which has just received a 1.1 update.

Of course, spelling is a lot more complex than adding numbers up to 9 - as was the case in DropSum - so in Word Tower, you can move the letters around the grid once they have fallen down. You can also flip and shake your device to change their formation.

For this reason, Word Tower is described by creator Mac Martine as being akin to a cross between Scrabble, Boggle and Tetris.

There are five game modes, from starter and basic to genius. The starter mode is a new addition to v1.1 for newbies. Genius is the hardest mode as it only accepts words of four letters or more, whereas you need three for the others.

Various special tiles also provide variation. You use the star for triple word scores, the bomb to blow up tiles, while the snowflake and ice tiles act as obstacles to making your word selection.

You can compare your scores online via a global leaderboard too.

The 1.1 version of Word Tower is out now on the App Store costing 99 cents or 59p. Hit the Buy It! button for direct the App Store link.
