Sony Ericsson sticking with Android while keeping an eye on Windows Phone 7
Important that only ‘a certain number of eco-systems’ prevail
Sony Ericsson has revealed that it intends to continue backing Android in the increasingly hard-fought mobile OS wars.
In an interview with Pocket-lint, acting head of global marketing Steven Walker spoke of “the need as an industry to galvanise behind the Android ecosystem to create a strong ecosystem for consumers”.
It seems the company feels that there’s a danger of backing too many horses in this race, and that its Android focus will help ensure “that there will only be a certain number of eco-systems that will prevail.”
Despite such apparently pro-Google and anti-everything else statements, Walker refused to rule out Microsoft’s recent re-entry to the mobile platform scene.
“We continue to engage in a relationship with Microsoft,” he said, “but we haven’t made any concrete announcement about when and how we would introduce Windows Phone 7 into the portfolio.”
So that’s ‘when and how,’ with ‘if’ conspicuous by its absence. We could well see a new Sony Ericsson Windows Phone yet.
