The Times reckons Nokia could be making a Windows Mobile phone

What do you do when you’re the biggest handset manufacturer in the world, but your highend phones lack a decent OS to rival the likes of Android and iPhone?

At the same time, what do you do when you’re the biggest OS developer in the world, but you desperately need a killer mobile handset to help rival the likes of Android and iPhone?

It seems The Times has been putting two and two together to make Windows Phone 7-powered Nokia.

In a recent article discussing the fortunes of British microchip manufacturer Wolfson Microelectronics, Times business writer Alex Spence wrote that the company “was selected by a leading mobile phone manufacturer - believed to be Nokia - to provide some of the technology for its new Windows Mobile handset.”

It’s hard to know what to make of this, given Nokia’s long-standing commitment to the Symbian platform and its involvement with the MeeGo project with Intel.

It could just be that Spence has got it wrong. Although a partnership - however unlikely - could make a great deal of sense for both parties.
