The marriage of martial arts and Sudoku was an inevitability. (Is this the irony I keep reading about? – Ed.) And at least we've not had to wait too long, with developer Zoonami deciding the world is ready for its fresh take on the popular paper and pencil puzzle game.

Zendoku centres around the addictive qualities of Sudoku and introduces a number of colourful characters who must attack or defend against challengers, or race against the clock, via a control system based on each handheld's respective button set up.

Oh, and did we mention that while this battling is going on you're expected to simultaneously tackle one of the infinite number of puzzle permutations offered?

A variety of single- and wireless multiplayer modes are promised, along with an accessible learning curve and, above all, fresh frantic fun.

No release date has yet been mentioned, but as soon as we get our hands on code we'll let you know whether the potential accomplishment of this union is more like Paul Newman's or Paul McCartney's.
