Marvel: Ultimate Alliance swinging, stomping and slicing its way to PSP

Will the largest roster of supergoodies ever assembled in a video game be enough to save the day?

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance swinging, stomping and slicing its way to PSP

Imagine a game in which you command over 140 Marvel characters. That'd just be silly, which is probably why the latest Marvel title from Activision may feature that many, but it only gives you control of 20.

Well, you know what they say about quality versus quantity. Or at least you will do once you have the likes of Blade, Captain America, Wolverine and Spider-Man as part of your crime-fighting squad.

As this is an action RPG, you're able to customize your group as well as increase each of your characters' abilities by distributing the experience points you earn while battling to save not only Earth – a given when you're a superhero, after all – but also the entire Marvel universe!

And in order to spice things up, your actions, the missions you accept, the objectives completed and your interactions with your superbuddies will all affect how the story pans out.

One thing you won't be able to do though is get through the experience without conflict. The game's new combat system enables you to tackle supervillains in the air, on the ground and even underwater with grappling, blocking and dodging moves, as well as using whatever you find lying around as one- or two-handed weapons. And, of course, you've always got your superpowers to fall back on.

Or your friends – a multiplayer option will enable players to join forces as their favourite Marvel marvel and battle evil in both on- and offline cooperative story modes. There's also talk of a competitive option that tracks certain in-game stats, displaying how players stack up against one another, which in turn affects the amount of experience points earned and how equipment is distributed.

This good versus evil smorgasbord is scheduled for this autumn, and we'll let you know what we think of it just as soon as we've squeezed into our favourite brightly coloured nylon ensembles.
