$499 to touch the Surface (Updated with UK prices)

[Update] Microsoft reveals pricing for Windows RT range of Surface tablets
|

Microsoft has revealed its pricing structure for its upcoming Surface with Windows RT tablets, which are due to hit retail outlets on October 26th.

Early adopters of The Big M's debut slate can expect to pay $499 for the entry-level 32GB model without the keypad Touch Cover.

That puts it in direct competition with the new iPad, the cheapest version of which retails for $499. Bear in mind, though, that this particular model of the new iPad only comes with 16GB of internal storage (vs the Surface with Windows RT's 32GB).

If you're prepared to part with a little more cash, you can purchase the 32GB variant of the Surface with Windows RT tablet with a Touch Cover for $599, or upgrade to a 64GB model for $699.

Scratching the surface

It's worth noting that the Surface with Windows RT tablets will - surprise, surprise - be running Windows RT, a simplified version of Windows 8 designed specifically for ARM devices.

Microsoft is expected to unveil another collection of tablets (entitled 'Surface Pro') running Windows 8 at a later date.

The link to the Surface with Windows RT pricing page is now dead (possibly due to the pricing structure being unveiled prematurely), but you can check out a screencap of the page below (thanks, TechCrunch).

Updated on October 16th, at 17:54: Good news, UK readers. Microsoft has revealed the UK pricing for Surface with Windows RT.

Surface with Windows RT tablets will be available in the UK starting at £399. For that outlay, you will be able to pick up the entry-level 32GB tablet without the Touch Cover.

Pony up another £80 and Microsoft will throw in a Touch Cover with your 32GB touchscreen slate. For £559, meanwhile, you can get your hands on the 64GB Surface with Windows RT tablet with the Touch Cover.

The tablets and the Touch Covers are available in three colours, by the way: black, cyan, and white.

You can pre-order a Surface with Windows RT tablet from here.
