Windows Phone becomes fastest-growing mobile OS with annual growth of 277%
Still trailing in 5th place overall, though
Things are looking up for Microsoft ahead of the launch of the next iteration of its increasingly popular Windows Phone operating system.
According to data analyst Canalys, around 5.1 million phones sold globally in Q2 2012 were powered by the Redmond-based company's mobile OS, which represents a staggering 277.3 per cent increase over the same period of 2011.
This dramatic boost means that Windows Phone is the fastest-growing mobile OS on the market, with an annual growth that's double that of Google's Android.
Microsoft still has a long way to go, mind. In spite of promising growth, Windows Phone still only accounts for 3.2 per cent of the entire mobile market, which leaves The Big M's operating system trailing behind the likes of BlackBerry and Symbian.
