Microsoft wanted to hit the ground running with its new mobile platform, and it appears to have done so quite effectively if reports released today are to be believed.

The fledging Marketplace now contains 1,600 apps after just 20 days in service, 26 per cent of which (around 676) are games.

The Redmond giant didn’t reach that number through just word of mouth, though - reports released prior to the unveiling of the launch handsets suggested that developers were being paid to bring their iOS games to the platform for launch.

The average price of an app on the store is slightly lower than the iPhone, coming in at £1.57 compared to £2.50, but this significantly rises when it comes to Xbox Live enabled titles, which come in at £3.52 on average.

It’s got a long way to go before it catches up with the App Store or Android Market though, which currently contain 300,000 and 100,000 apps respectively.
