CES 2011: Game Room dusts off classic arcade titles for Windows Phone 7

No need for pocket change to play classic arcade games, just a Windows Phone 7 in your pocket with the announcement of Game Room.

Currently available for Xbox 360 and PC, Game Room offers a range of classic arcade titles including Asteroids, Centipede, Tempest, and Scramble.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed the news during the company's annual keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, stating the service would be available for Windows Phone 7 devices in the near future.

While Asteroids Deluxe (pictured here running on Windows Phone 7 hardware) is currently the only confirmed title, you can expect plenty more once Game Room launches.

Along with an option to purchase individual games, the Xbox 360 and PC versions enable you to purchase tokens to be used for one-off gameplay sessions with the games of your choosing.

It's a setup that's been tried by several iPhone and iPod touch titles like Capcom Arcade, but due to a poor game library and iffy execution. Here's hoping Microsoft can nail the approach.

Game Room will be available for Windows Phone 7 handsets sometime in 2011.
