Zune integration coming to Windows Mobile

But which one?

Microsoft’s current portable media endeavour is a tale of two contrasting systems.

On the one hand, we have Zune HD, a cool, forward-thinking portable media player that - by all accounts - gives the iPod touch a genuine run for its money. It’s powered by a slick and good looking OS and should be top of your most wanted list when it’s released over here.

Then there’s Windows Mobile 6.5, a fairly disastrous stop-gap of a smart phone operating system, which was released solely because Windows Mobile 7 wasn’t ready on time. It’s widely considered to be a dated and unwieldy system with a barely intact new skin.

So when Steve Ballmer recently told Engadget that Zune integration was coming to the next release of Windows Mobile, it provoked as many questions as it answered.

Chief among them has to be: which Windows Mobile is that, exactly?

Is Microsoft trying to salvage instant credibility by attaching some Zune cool to WinMo 6.5.1? Or is it a case of holding off until the release of the much-anticipated WinMo 7 next year in an attempt to really give Apple something to think about?

Watch this space.
