Microsoft has just released the free Xbox One SmartGlass companion app for iOS, Android, Windows 8, and Windows Phone 8 in preparation for the launch of the console later in the week.

With this app installed on your mobile gizmo, your smartphone or tablet turns into a second screen for The Big M's upcoming console.

Through the Xbox One SmartGlass app, then, you can obtain additional information about the media you're watching or the game you're playing.

Your device will also be instantly transformed into a remote control, enabling you to navigate through your Xbox One and control your TV (if it's set up just right).

Microsoft's original SmartGlass companion app was designed for the Xbox 360, and did much the same thing as this new Xbox One-centric application.

We walked you through the connection process when the first Xbox SmartGlass app hit the App Store, and we expect you'll be doing something similar at the end of the week to connect to your shiny new Xbox One.

There's a similar app for the PS4, as you'd expect, although it looks like Microsoft has added a few more bells and whistles to its own companion app.

You can grab the Xbox One SmartGlass app from the App Store [download], the Windows Phone Store [download], the Windows Store [download], and the Google Play Store [download] right now.

Obviously, though, you'll need an Xbox One to get the most out of it.
