Update: After the initial publication of this story, we've since learned that Terraria has been confirmed for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 8. The original story follows.

2013's shaping up to be a busy year for Terraria, the beloved side-scrolling sandbox game originally released for the PC back in 2011.

First we heard that a PS Vita port of Terraria was in the works, and now Polygon reports that 505 Games announced it will publish a mobile version of Terraria this summer.

The mobile port of Terraria is being developed by Dutch studio Codeglue - which was responsible for the Pocket Gamer Bronze Award-winning Rocket Riot.

Terraria nova

In your average game of Terraria, you'll be saddled with the task of exploring a randomly-generated 16-bit world.

As you find your way about the pixelated environment, you'll pick up a variety of ingredients that allow you to craft tools which you can then use to harvest rare resources straight-up Minecraft-style.

Once you gather enough of these resources, you'll need to combine them to form weapons. Well, you don't really need to combine them to form weapons, but it's a good idea to do so if you hope to survive the waves of enemies that come out at night.

For those who appreciate a challenge, Terraria also features character permadeath if you play at its toughest difficulty setting.

We don't know whether the mobile port of Terraria will make its way to iOS, Android, or Windows 8, but we'll keep you updated as soon as we know more.
