We knew this day was coming: the Angry Birds movie is actually happening.

Rumoured since 2011, the Angry Birds motion picture will soon take wing under the guiding hand of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Fans eager to see their favourite belligerent birds on the big screen will need to be patient, however - the 3D film currently has a release date of July 1, 2016.

The feathers will fly

Gamespot reports that Iron Man producer David Maisel is attached to the Angry Birds film as the executive producer, and Despicable Me's producer John Cohen is on board as well in a producing role.

Intriguingly, Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton and co-chairman Amy Pascal hinted that this might be the beginning of a multi-film partnership:

"We're thrilled to be distributing this film and we hope this is just the beginning of what will be a long relationship with Rovio as we look for ways to work on future projects together."

It's probably just polite PR fluff, but try and act surprised when Amazing Alex and Bad Piggies show up at your local cinema.
