[Update] Angry Birds Star Wars hits iPhone, iPad, and Android

Use the force (Updated: now available on Windows Phone)

Product: Angry Birds Star Wars | Developer: Rovio | Publisher: Rovio | Genre: Action, Puzzle | Networking: wireless (network), on one device

I just felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of nerds suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. Yep, that's right, Angry Birds Star Wars has just gone live on the App Store and Google Play.

This is a collaboration between Rovio and LucasFilm, where those pesky birds dress up as Star Wars heroes - including Luke, Han, and Chewbacca - and then fling themselves at pigs playing Stormtroopers.

The game is a mix of classic Angry Birds, and the anti-gravity capers of Angry Birds Space. It all depends on whether you're beating up Sand People on Tatooine, or wrecking TIE Fighters in the shadow of the Death Star.

Intergalactic planetary

You'll get 80 levels for your cash, spread over two chapters: Tatooine and Death Star. They mirror the first movie, and you'll unlock characters in sync with the plot. There are also a handful of bonus stages to unlock, either by finding golden droids or by collecting bucketloads of stars.

There are a further 40 levels to play - featuring Luke and Yoda on the swampy planet of Dagobah - but you'll need to cough up £1.49 / $1.99 extra (as an in-app purchase) to play them.

More free stages are on the way, though. The app teases that the icy climbs of Planet Hoth are coming soon.

12 parsecs

Like the Space Eagle in Angry Birds Space, you can call on the Millennium Falcon to swoop in, fire off a few laser beams, and generally cause wanton chaos and destruction. Each ship strike costs a token - you'll get a few as you play, but you'll need to pay for the rest.

Those tokens range from £1.49 / $1.99 for 20 to £13.99 / $19.99 for 200. Expect to pay a small fortune if you want to get gold Falcon medals on each and every level.

I find your lack of faith disturbing

In our review, we said of Angry Birds Star Wars, "it is - by far - the best version of Angry Birds yet." We also said other nice things, like "Angry Birds Star Wars is faithful to the source material, filled with content, imaginative, and fun."

These ARE the droids you're looking for

On iOS, the game is split into two apps. There's an iPhone and iPod touch edition that supports the new 4-inch screen and costs 69p / 99c, and an HD edition for iPad that will set you back £1.99 / $2.99.

More of an Android fan? There's a free ad-supported version for smartphones, and an HD edition for tablets that costs £1.99 / $2.99.

The game is also available on Windows Phone, but you'll need a shiny new Windows Phone 8 device to play it. It costs 79p.
