Handset manufacture HTC has announced a new Android-powered phone aimed at a younger, social network-savvy audience.

Looking similar (if a little tubbier) to the Desire, the entry-level HTC Wildfire will run the latest version of Android (2.1) along with HTC’s widely acclaimed Sense UI.

In terms of specs, there’s nothing that will trouble the current breed of 1GHz superphones, but then the Wildfire could end up retailing at around a fifth of the price.

The phone will feature a 3.2-inch QVGA display, powered by a 528MHz processor and 384MB RAM, which puts it just slightly ahead of the likes of the T-Mobile G1.

Elsewhere, the phone will feature a five-megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash, a 3.5mm audio jack, a micro SD card slot, and the usual GPS and wi-fi capabilities.

It’s in terms of software that the Wildfire promises to make some interesting advances, though. As part of HTC’s intention to make, “the company’s signature HTC Sense experience accessible to a younger audience” with the handset, it will feature a new app sharing widget.

According to HTC, the widget, “enables you to recommend an application by email, text message, or over social networks. Your friends will receive a link allowing them to find the application on the Android Market with a single click and download it to their phone.”

The phone will be available across Europe and Asia in the third quarter of 2010.
