This new iPhone Samurai game isn't related to Samurai: Way of the Warrior, just to clarify. No, this is a freebie promo for the latest addition to the console franchise of the same name.
The iPhone version of Way of the Samurai 3 uses concept artwork used in the super-console versions to create a side-scrolling hack 'n' slash with something of an impressionist graphical style, which is a nice substitute for the fancy 3D stuff seen on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Way of the Samurai 3 pits you against a horde of bandits plaguing the lands of Amana during the Sengoku Period. It also features video footage from the console version to get you in the bushido spirit (a bonus, or an advert? You decide).
Although it's apparently only free for a limited time, it seems queer that a promo game designed to shift a few extra boxed copies would cost money. All the same, if you fancy Way of the Samurai 3 for the iPhone it's probably wise not to waste time picking it up.
And judging by the trailer (which doesn't show much to do with the iPhone, admittedly) this looks like exactly the kind of gritty, raw-knuckle brawler the iPhone is lacking, so it's definitely worth a closer inspection for a freebie.
