Freeverse’s ambitious space trader and combat game Warpgate certainly offers plenty of content thanks to its hours of story as well as unlimited procedural missions.

The price tag - $4.99 on iPhone and $7.99 on iPad - appears to have been a barrier to wannabe starship troopers however, with the game presumed to have experienced less than stellar sales as a straight paid for title.

At least, that seems to be the reason Freeverse has changed tack, now releasing free versions both for the iPhone and the iPad.

Called Warpgate Free, these enable you to play through the first couple of hours of the plot up to the Delta Aquarii solar system. You can still play procedural missions and trade items, but to unlock the rest of the story, you’ll have to pay the full amount.

“Free is definitely the buzzword for games at the moment, and we wanted to help Warpgate get more exposure and to get it into the hands of players who might be tempted but want to try out the gameplay first,” explained senior producer Bruce Morrison.
