Microsoft HoloLens 'Developers Edition' priced at $3000

Microsoft has detailed the initial price and availability of its HoloLens augmented reality devices in New York today, and it's not pretty.

A Microsoft employee wearing a HoloLens took to the stage to show off an experimental game called Project XRay, which featured spatially aware robots reacting to the real world by climbing over and crashing through physical objects.

It was a flashy way to announce the HoloLens release date, but an effective one, with spatial sound delivering the robots dying screens as the Microsoft employee carved a swath through the evil robotic hordes.

Developers looking to get hold of the "HoloLens Development Edition" will be able to apply online from today for the opportunity to buy one.

These will sell to the lucky few for $3000 dollars and should be with developers in the opening months of 2016.

The high price coupled with the developer branding on this first edition imply that this isn't intended for consumers, but this price is still going to make it prohibitive to hobbyist developers and smaller independent outfits.

Microsoft has no new information to share regarding the specifications or capabilities but Peter Bright at Ars Technica managed to grab some specs during a hands on with the device earlier in the year - an x86 processor, 2GB ram, 802.11ac and a 60Hz refresh rate - and the development device is expected to have similar capabilities.
