Apple finally readying gaming handheld?

And it's about time if you ask us

We normally don't report these sorts of 'developments' but this is just too juicy a start to a Monday morning to pass up. You see, Apple has filed a new application to ensure that the word 'APPLE' is trademarked for:
"Toys, games and playthings, namely, hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games"
Now we all know that rumors about Apple's entry into the lucrative gaming field are nothing new. In late 2006 we came across a patent for what looked like a handheld gaming device from Apple.

More interesting still is the fact that last year Apple Computer Inc dropped the word Computer from its title to reflect its ongoing push into the wider consumer electronics field.

We would say that the likelihood of this happening at some stage is relatively high. Apple has branched out into the media player market with the iPod, the movie and TV market with Apple TV and the phone market with the iPhone. Could gaming be the next frontier that Apple tackles? As we've previously mentioned, it's just too lucrative a market for it not to.
