We covered Nintendo's Short Cuts short film competition a while back on the Pocket Gamer blog, but lost heart slightly after the first wave of entrants were little more than fan montage videos of popular Nintendo franchises.

Now that we have had a chance to turn our backs, the competition is over and it transpires the winning film is a good deal more than a cut-and-paste fan video. New York-based filmmaker Jack Paccione Jr's Good vs. Wiivil is a comic tale about, erm, good versus evil, and what happens when the Wii goes bad and possesses a hapless ice cream shop worker.

We don't want to spoil it for you by saying too much, except that this is a fine little film and certainly a worthy winner. Although it could have done with a few more DSs.

The ten finalists can be viewed over at the official Short Cuts site, and even though the winner has already been announced, you can still vote for your favourites. We can't think of a better excuse for a coffee break.
