The 15th annual Webby Award nominations for 2011 are in, and there are a couple of surprises in the ‘best handheld device game’ section.

Although nominees such as Angry Birds, FarmVille (on iPhone) and Fruit Ninja will surprise no-one, the other two in the section - Elmo’s Monster Maker and Cocktail Culture (a bartending tie-in to the TV show Mad Men) - may raise eyebrows.

Phil Larsen, marketing director at Halfbrick, was understandably happy with Fruit Ninja being among the potential winners. "As one of the very few game developers nominated for a 2011 Webby Award, Halfbrick couldn't be prouder to stand behind Fruit Ninja and everything we've achieved over the past 12 months.”

A new section to the awards, the best game on ‘tablet & all other devices,’ has also been introduced, and includes Jambalaya, Rhythm Racer 2, Tron Legacy: Circuit Pulse, GoodieWords and Grover’s Number Special.

Voting for the awards will commence on April the 28th, with winners announced at the event on the 13th of June. Gamasutra
