H.P. Lovecraft's horror creeps onto iPhone in The Necronomicon Card Game

iPhone and iPod touch owning fans of H.P. Lovecraft’s nightmarish alternative reality will be pleased to learn that Lucidsphere Media will release The Necronomicon Card Game this summer.

The title is based on collectible card and role-playing games, promising to allow the in depth experience of such activities to be dipped in and out of on the go, without compromise.

“Role-playing games have always been fun, but these days a lot of people don’t have the time to invest in a game which can take hours to play,” says Dustin Neff, founder of Lucidsphere Media.

“I wanted to make a role-playing card game which someone could carry around in their pocket, so to speak. Most games like this require groups of players, a significant investment of money in books and other materials, and hours if not days of your free time. The Necronomicon Card Game can be played for five minutes, wherever you happen to be. If you’re interrupted, you can come back later and resume your game where you left off.”

You can build your deck in game, from a total of 80 cards (hand painted by a team of artists who have all worked in movie, comic book, publishing and video game companies previously). Cards are amassed as you progress, awarded for achievements, and there will be downloadable expansions in future.

The plot is classic Lovecraft, with the player attempting to prevent Cthulhu’s minions from entering the world. The mechanics of play, however, sound a little more interesting, allowing you to inhabit both investigators and innocent bystanders in the same game.

Keep an eye out for more news, and the game's release in the coming weeks.
