Despite all the talk of other devices eroding Apple's lead in the mobile market, iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad still stand as the devices of choice for game developers.

While there's some interesting stuff going on with Android, Windows Phone 7, and tablets, all of the big games on the foreseeable horizon are for iOS first. Just look at our rumours this week: all are coming to iPhone and iPod touch before anything else.

As usual, we mined three rumours for your pleasure, although podcast listeners get a bonus rumour this week. If you're eager for just one more, better get to downloading the podcast!

Captain America iOS movie tie-in title to be side-scrolling platformer

We already know that a game based on the upcoming Captain America movie is the works, but you didn't know that it's a side-scrolling platformer in the style of Mirror's Edge.

Rather than take the traditional route and slap Captain America into a generic third-person hack 'n' slash game, there's some interesting risk-taking going on that sounds weird but may end up working nicely. Think about swiping across the screen to issue a shield bash or double swipe to hurl the Cap's shield.

It's an interesting idea, at least, and one that I'd like to see tried. Even if it doesn't work out, the alternative involves rushing a samey 3D action game out the door. Personally, I want to see something different (admittedly, it's still just aping another game), so I'd be willing to give it a shot.

Sonic at the 2012 Olympic Games heading to iPhone and iPod touch

Sonic and pals' brief Olympic stint on the App Store wasn't his last if rumour of Sega crafting a version around next year's Summer Games in London prove true.

Following the formula established with the Nintendo DS versions developed around the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the game promises dozens of athletic mini-games both realistic and fantasy.

For instance, track and field events like the high jump and 100-meter dash are expected. Swimming will also make an appearance, as will gymnastics.

Just what those fantasy events entail remains to be seen. Instead of skeet shooting, perhaps Chaos Emerald shooting with Dr Robonik? Cycling with Sonic through Green Hill Zone?

Whatever the case, here's hoping that Sonic at the 2012 Olympic Games is better than the abysmal 2010 Winter Games effort that skimped on content and quality alike.

Square Enix porting Final Fantasy IV remake to iPhone and iPod touch

Final Fantasy IVIn the wait for an iPhone and iPod touch release of Final Fantasy VI - without question the greatest of the 2D instalments - Square Enix is tiding us over with a port of the Final Fantasy IV remake issued for Nintendo DS way back in 2007.

It's a smart idea: not only has Final Fantasy III done well on the App Store, demonstrating a desire for more of the franchise, but the remake of Final Fantasy IV was received favourably by critics. Re-releasing the DS version gives it another shot at commercial success, as well as catering to requests for Final Fantasy games on iOS.

Expect an announcement during E3 (along with confirmation that Chrono Trigger is heading to iPhone and iPod touch before the end of 2011). By that time, you ought to be so thoroughly engrossed in Final Fantasy Tactics that you might not even notice.
