The side-scrolling action platformer is a standard genre for smartphone developers, but it's a long time since we've seen something that looks as good as Roboto.

From US outfit Fenix Fire, it places you inside the tin shell of Roboto - a 'typical awkward teen robot boy who's trying to fit in with his rocket board riding crew, pass Botology 101, and beat his high score in Robotron.'

Of course, being a teen drama, there's also a girl, who unexpectedly disappears, triggering his epic intergalactic quest to find her.

Perhaps more interesting in terms of gaming is the grinding, air walking, and ollying you get to perform on your rocket board.

Roboto sees you manoeuvring through 30 levels, collecting power ups, operating switches, reversing gravity, avoiding swinging balls, and shredding every bot and mechanical menace that stands between you and your one true love.

"I can't wait for action platformer game fans of all ages to rocket board with Roboto across the Galaxy," Brian McRae, Fenix Fire's creative director, says.

"They'll discover a light-hearted adventure with all the fun and addicting gameplay action of old school platformers they've come to know and love with our own Fenix Fire twist."

Roboto is being developed for iPhone, iPad, and Android phones and tablets, and should be out soon.

In the meantime, check out this gameplay video.
