A poll conducted for the London Games Festival has crowned Sonic The Hedgehog as UK's top gaming icon.

As reported by Digital Spy, Sega's flagship blue hedgehog sped past his competitors collecting 24 per cent of the vote.

Nintendo plumber Mario only managed to fix himself 21 per cent, while the rest of the favourites list was filled by Lara Croft (16 per cent), Donkey Kong (11 per cent), Pac-Man (10 per cent), Link (5 per cent), Max Payne (4 per cent), Pikachu (3 per cent), Niko Bellic of GTA IV (2 per cent) and Streetfighter's Blanka (1 per cent).

500 British gamers were polled during the festival to come up with the final list that will no doubt have Mario ranting uncontrollably to Peach while she tries to cook his spag boll tonight, and Master Chief taking off his helmet and kicking it across his spaceship in a violent rage.
