Nokia has revealed that its forthcoming flagship device, the N8, will be the last N-Series device to run the Symbian OS.

As hinted at with the recent N9 video leak, future N-Series devices will sport the MeeGo OS. The incoming operating system represents a combination of Nokia’s Maemo (as seen on the impressive N900) and Intel’s Moblin.

That won’t be the end of Symbian on Nokia devices, though, with current and future versions of the OS continuing to feature on mid range handsets in the X and E-Series.

Early impressions of the N8, which is set to be released in September, have been rather mixed. While much positivity surrounds the hardware – with particular praise going to the 12MP camera – Symbian continues to underwhelm next to high-end rivals such as iOS and Android.
