iPhone publishing giant Gameloft, the studio behind titles like Shadow Guardian, Zombie Infection, and Starfront: Collision, has signed a long-term licensing deal with Epic Games to use its powerful Unreal Engine 3 in four new games.

The beefy mobile game engine was shown off to its fullest in 2010’s hack-and-slash iOS RPG, Infinity Blade. Dungeon Defenders: First Wave on Android was another early adopter of the engine.

It’s the same technology used in high-profile console games like Gears of War and Mass Effect, but squashed down to fit mobile devices.

Under the agreement, Gameloft will be making four games, two to be released in 2011 and two in 2012, on multiple mobile and downloadable platforms. For the time being, that means iOS, Android, PlayStation Network, and set-top boxes.

"Using Unreal Engine 3 allows us to push game visuals with remarkable lighting and high-fidelity environments. We are confident that players will enjoy the games powered by Unreal Engine 3," said Julien Fournials, vice president of production at Gameloft.
