Hot off the heels of Epic Games and Chair Entertainment's announcement of multiplayer brawler Project Sword, Epic has released a technology demo on the App Store entitled Epic Citadel.

The free download lets you explore the highly detailed world of the Citadel, which is featured in the upcoming codenamed game Project Sword.

While there's no gameplay of which to speak, you are welcome to explore the streets, back alleys and surrounding terrain of the fully realised first-person mediaeval world.

Epic Games clearly intends this as a taste of what to expect from its high end action RPG game, expected before the end of this year.

In terms of the detail of Epic Citadel, Epic said it took a small team eight weeks to make using the full Unreal Engine 3.

Technical features include real time reflections, parallax and normal mapped surfaces, global illumination, texture blending with painted weight maps, and dynamic specular lighting with texture masks.

You can read the full list here.

Epic Citadel is now available for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad for free.

Note that it is only compatible with iPhone 3GS, third-generation iPod touch and above, and iPads. You are also advised to switch your device off and on before starting the app to ensure smooth running.
