Having played the game on Dreamcast - offline and online - as well as reviewing it on mobile, I've always had a soft spot for Sega's and Sonic Team's space mice/space cats game Chu Chu Rocket, and have been surprised it never made it to iPhone.

Well, now it is, with versions coming to iPhone and iPad: indeed the iPad version will include a mode supporting four players on-device.

Both iPhone and iPad will support Game Center, feature all the levels from the original Dreamcast version, and offer the four player mode using wi-fi for the multiplayer levels.

Cat got your Chu Chu?

As for the game itself, it's a quirky and colourful puzzler, in which you have to guide your Chu Chus - or space mice - into their escape rocket(s). Guarding the rocket(s) are the Kapu Kapus - space cats - who move along pre-determined paths.

To get the Chu Chus away, you have to place arrows (of the up, down, left or right variety) to guide the mice around each puzzle level, avoiding the cats, and to safety.

Other basic rules are that Chu Chus move faster than Kapu Kapus, and both species turn right whenever they collide with a barrier or the edge of the screen.

In single player modes, the game has Puzzle and Challenge options. The puzzle mode consists of 25 easy and 25 hard puzzles which you can compete at your leisure, while the Challenge mode is time-based and much more frantic.

Multiplayer sees players trying to direct the Chu Chus into their rockets, while laying down arrows that divert them from their opponents'.

Chu Chu Rocket for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad is due out in October.
