PC and Handhelds being left in the dark

Capcom: Gamers now play on iPhone

The president and COO of Capcom’s mobile arm, Midori Yuasa, has told trade website MCV that gamers are increasingly moving across to iPhone and other smartphones - to the detriment of traditional forms such as PCs and handhelds.

The comments come just days after Capcom spoke at Nintendo’s US and European 3DS launch, in which the company demonstrated Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition to journalists from around the world.

At the risk of sending mixed messages about the company’s focus, Yuasa believes that it will be smartphones, and not portable consoles like the 3DS, that will become the "universal game platform" of the future.

"The casual gamer that used to play on the PC and the hardcore gamer that used to play on a dedicated gaming portable now plays on their smartphone," said Yuasa.

Capcom is already planning two large launches for the iPhone this year - Devil May Cry 4: Refrain and Resident Evil Mercenaries Vs - and Yuasa promised that there was "a lot of stuff on the horizon for both hardcore and casual gamers" in 2011.
