Namco Bandai poaches Dr Kawashima for mobile

Nintendo DS boffin is going mobile

Product: Brain Coach with Dr Kawashima | Publisher: Namco Bandai Europe | Genre: Brain training
Nintendo doesn't make mobile games. Sadly, that seems unlikely to change anytime soon (although we're happy to give advice why it should). However, one of the company's biggest DS cover stars is going mobile.

No, not Pikachu.

Namco Bandai has announced that it's working on Brain Coach with Dr Kawashima, a brain training game endorsed by that chap from DS title Brain Training from Dr Kawashima.

Due out in December, the game has apparently been "scientifically tested at a leading university in Japan, and proven to stimulate the brain," according to Namco Bandai. That's a pretty broad statement, of course – pretty much any mobile game stimulates the brain at least a little bit.

The publisher hasn't revealed many details about the game itself, other than that it follows the formula of daily exercises to train and track your brain fitness.

"The formula of this application has already proven successful by establishing a base of millions of Nintendo DS players worldwide, and with Dr Kawashima's approval we are pleased to bring this official mobile game to the larger mass of mobile phone users," said a particularly clever Masaji Okubo, MD of Namco Bandai Networks Europe.

We wonder what Nintendo will make of it?

I believe the licensing deal is direct with Dr Kawashima himself, so Nintendo won't see a penny..

It is direct with the Doc alright. Nintendo licensed the rights for DS with the Doc selling the other rights seperatly.

Seriously if I could go back and put money on the odds of a real life middle aged doctor becoming the new (psuedo) Ninty Mascot and darling of the gaming world I'd be a very rich man.

My guess is that ten years from now we will be playing games about unblocking sinks and sweeping the floor and they will be sponsored by an odd job chap called Jimmy Price.
